UN rapporteur: Israel’s history of assassinating Palestinians is “long and requires accountability”

Palestine – A UN rapporteur confirmed on Saturday that Israel’s history of assassinating Palestinians inside and outside the country is “long and cannot go unpunished.”

This was stated by the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, commenting on recent extrajudicial “killings” from Lebanon to Iran.

“I, along with other UN experts, have condemned the escalation of violence in the Middle East, and the recent round of extrajudicial killings and assassinations, from Lebanon to Iran, which may also amount to acts of aggression,” she added.

On her account on the X platform, the UN rapporteur highlighted that Israel’s history of assassinating Palestinians inside and outside the country is “long and cannot go unpunished.”

Albanese stressed that independent, transparent investigations and accountability must be part of the path to peace.

Israel is anticipating a possible military attack from Iran and Lebanon, after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, and the Israeli army’s announcement a day earlier of the assassination of prominent leader Fouad Shukr in a raid on Beirut.

The escalating tensions in the region come against the backdrop of a war waged by Israel on Gaza with American support since October 7, which has left more than 131,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and a deadly famine.

In contempt of the international community, Tel Aviv continues this war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
