UN: Palestinian prisoners exposed to torture by Israel

– Testimony collected by my office and other organizations indicates a number of horrific acts, including water torture and cases where dogs have been unleashed on prisoners, says UN human rights chief Volker Türk.

The report also points to sleep deprivation, electric shocks and other forms of torture and ill-treatment.

– It is an obvious violation of international human rights and international humanitarian law, he says.

According to the report, over 9,400 people were in “security custody” at the end of June. Some of them have not been given access to lawyers, and their legal rights have not been respected, writes the UN. The content of the report has also been shared with the Israeli authorities, the authors state.

The report is one of the most comprehensive of its kind, and its findings could be used by the prosecution at the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is looking into crimes committed in connection with the attack on October 7 and in its aftermath, including Israel’s warfare in the Gaza Strip.

Recently, nine Israeli soldiers were arrested and accused of gross mistreatment of a prisoner in Sde Teiman prison. The arrest has led to widespread protests from the far right in Israeli politics.
