The United Nations General Assembly voted by an overwhelming majority for a resolution recognizing that Palestine can become a full member of the UN, recommending that the Security Council “reconsider the matter favorably”. 143 countries voted in favor of the text, 9 voted once morest it, while 25 – including Italy – abstained. The resolution grants Palestine a significant extension of rights to participate in sessions of the UN General Assembly, which recognized it as an observer state in 2012, despite resistance from the United States. Palestine and the Vatican are the only two non-member states with observer status at the UN. The approved resolution also urges the United Nations Security Council to consider “favorably” Palestine’s full membership of the UN.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, tore the United Nations Charter to pieces by criticizing from the stage of the Glass Palace the position of the General Assembly, which a few minutes ago approved a resolution on full membership of the state Palestinian. Erdan, as seen in a video, destroyed the document by inserting it into a paper shredder. He then accused the United Nations of violating its own Charter by allowing the Palestinian state to be admitted as a member. «You are tearing the United Nations Charter to pieces with your own hands. Yes, yes, that’s what you’re doing. Destroy the Charter of the United Nations. Shame on you”, declared the ambassador, quoted by the Guardian.
