UN: Over 1,200 people imprisoned in Venezuela after disputed election

The figures come from the independent observation body of the UN, which keeps an eye on the human rights situation in Venezuela. It covers the period from July 28, when the South American country held its disputed election, to August 8.

– Demonstrations and criticism on social media in the weeks after the election have been met with fierce repression from the authorities at the highest levels, which has led to widespread fear, says a statement.

The monitoring body describes the detentions as arbitrary and notes that parents are also not allowed to accompany their children during the court proceedings.

Of the 23 people who, according to the UN, have been killed in connection with the demonstrations, 18 are young men under the age of 30. The vast majority of them were shot.

President Nicolás Maduro, who has been in power in Venezuela since 2013, was declared the winner in last month’s election by the country’s electoral authorities, who are seen as loyal to him.

The opposition accuses the government of election fraud and claims it was their candidate Edmundo González who won. Several countries, including the United States, have recognized González as the rightful election winner.
