UN mission receives information on possible human rights violations in Venezuela since July 28

The United Nations Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela has begun receiving information on possible human rights violations that occurred following the July 28 presidential elections.

The organization enabled a Web page to upload files containing records of possible cases of human rights violations. The information will be stored in a digital cloud and will be evaluated by the mission representatives.

“The @UN Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela is receiving information on human rights violations following the July 28 elections. Information can be sent securely and confidentially,” the UN Human Rights Council said on its X account.

UN mission previously warned about these events

The independent mission issued a statement Wednesday, July 31, on human rights violations in protests following the presidential elections in Venezuela on July 28.

In the text, the organization warned that thousands of people had taken to the streets to express their disagreement over the resultsfor which they received “credible information” about “arrests, injuries and deaths, as well as violence deployed by security forces and groups of armed civilians supporting the government (known as colectivos)” during the protests.

Venezuelan non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Foro Penal and Provea have documented daily cases of arrests, forced disappearances, harassment, and injured and killed protesters in the context of post-election protests.

The UN panel of experts also referred again to the “collectives”, who have been reported to have fired gunshots at protesters.

Marta Valiñas, president of the Mission, called on the Venezuelan State to follow international human rights standards and norms, which establish the proportionate use of force and the protection of human life.

The statement also mentions that the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of hundreds of people in the context of the protests. Regarding this, the Mission pointed out that some of these people were released, while others remain detained and face serious charges, such as crimes linked to terrorism.

The Fact-Finding Mission has been documenting crimes against humanity and human rights violations in its reports, which are presented to the UN Human Rights Council and its members on a regular basis since 2019, when the mission was established in Venezuela.
