Beirut – The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, warned that Lebanon and the region are on the “brink of imminent danger,” stressing that “a diplomatic solution to get out of the crisis is still possible.”
This came during her and Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix’s briefing to the Security Council, according to a statement received by Anadolu Agency.
Hennis-Plasschaert briefed the Security Council that “Lebanon and the entire region remain on the brink of imminent danger.”
She continued: “Despite this, a diplomatic solution to get out of the crisis is still possible,” expressing her refusal to accept “that a comprehensive conflict is inevitable.”
She expressed hope that reaching an “agreement on Gaza” would lead to an immediate return to a cessation of hostilities across the Blue Line.
The UN official expressed her fears that “any miscalculation by any party could lead to a wider conflict that would affect the entire region.”
She called for making every possible effort to “keep the two parties away from the brink of further escalation,” stressing that implementing Resolution 1701 is the path to sustainable security.
On August 11, 2006, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701, calling for a complete cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel, and for the creation of an area between the Blue Line (the border between Lebanon and Israel) and the Litani River in southern Lebanon, free of any armed men, military equipment and weapons, except those belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces and the UNIFIL forces.
Since October 8, 2023, Lebanese and Palestinian factions in Lebanon have been exchanging daily shelling with the Israeli army across the “Blue Line,” leaving hundreds dead and wounded, most of them on the Lebanese side.
These factions are making the cessation of the bombing conditional on Israel ending a war it has been waging with American support on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, which has left more than 129,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing.
