UN humanitarian chief: ‘Gaza has become simply uninhabitable’

“Three months following the horrific attacks on October 7, the Gaza Strip has become a place of death and despair,” Mr Griffiths said in a statement.

“The Gaza Strip has become simply uninhabitable. Its inhabitants face daily threats to their existence while the world continues to watch, he said. “The humanitarian community had an impossible mission to help more than two million people.”

Much of the Gaza Strip has already been reduced to rubble, and AFP correspondents reported that Israel struck Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip early Saturday, where hundreds of thousands of people have sought refuge from the fighting.

“We continue to demand an immediate end to the war, not only for the people of Gaza and its neighboring countries who are at risk, but for the sake of future generations who will never forget these 90 days of hell and attacks on the most basic principles of humanity,” Mr Griffiths said.

“This war should never have started. However, it is long past time to end it,” he said.

About 1,140 people, mostly civilians, were killed in an attack by the Islamist group Hamas in Israel on October 7, AFP reports, citing the latest official Israeli data.

In response, Israel launched a bombardment and ground invasion that killed at least 22,600 people, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
