The special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Abdoulaye Bathily, who had held these functions since September 2022, resigned on Tuesday April 16, but he held prior to this gesture, to deliver, openly, its reading of a lasting exit from the crisis Libya plunged into chaos since the assassination of its Guide Muammar Gaddafi on October 20, 2011.

“In the current situation, there is no chance that the United Nations can operate successfully. As far as I am concerned, I did my best,” summarized Abdoulaye Bathily, stressing that the political stagnation in Libya has its origins in the “lack of political will and good faith of the main Libyan actors who are accommodating of the current impasse since 2011” and “emerging international and regional dynamics in which Libyan territory is used as a site of military confrontation by different countries.”

Resolutely optimistic, the UN envoy Bathily does not see a stagnation in the political situation in Libya following his departure from his post. Shock therapy according to its projections recommends “a change of priority to aim for a political settlement through Dialogue and compromise, to not let the aspirations of 2.8 million registered Libyan voters be eclipsed by the particular interests of a few some”.

The UN General Secretariat “is grateful to Mr. Bathily for his leadership of UNSMIL and for his tireless efforts to restore peace and stability in Libya,” assured Antonio Guterres following the resignation of this senior Senegalese official, whose actual departure date from Libya has not yet been communicated.
