An overwhelming majority (141 in favor, 7 against) of the general assembly approved a resolution calling for a “durable and just peace” and recognition of Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders.

The General Assembly of United Nations gave a new sample of the international isolation that lives Russia and this Thursday (02.23.2023) approved by a large majority a resolution calling for peace in Ukraine, almost a year after the invasion ordered by the Vladimir Putin regime. kyiv had insisted in the last few hours that the international community had to choose between “good and evil.”

In a non-binding vote, albeit with a strong symbolic charge, the assembly meeting in New York approved with 141 votes in favor, 7 against (Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Nicaragua, Mali and Syria) and 32 abstentions (China , India and much of Africa), a text that demands the “immediate and unconditional withdrawal” of the invading troops, the cessation of hostilities and a “just and lasting” peace.

The document reaffirms support for Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting Russian claims to annex occupied parts of the country, and demands that Moscow respect Ukraine’s “internationally recognized borders.” Russia has used its veto power to prevent binding resolutions in the UN Security Council.

Do not repeat the meeting in 2024

“Next year we should not gather here to commemorate the second anniversary of this senseless war of aggression,” Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said during the debate. “Russia can and must be stopped,” said her colleague from France, Catherine Colonna, who added that this conflict concerns the entire planet as it is a war that threatens “the existence of a state in the midst of a plan of imperialist domination, and because it denies the existence of borders”.
