New York – After years of negotiations, the UN member states have agreed on the text for the first international high seas treaty to protect the world’s oceans. “The ship has reached the shore,” said the head of the UN conference, Rena Lee, on Saturday evening (local time) at the United Nations headquarters in New York to the applause of the delegates. The agreement was reached after a marathon meeting lasting over 24 hours. Actually, the conference should have ended on Friday.
