UN Committee of 24: Chile, Indonesia, Congo and Cuba Support Political Solution for Moroccan Sahara Dispute

Chile, Indonesia, Congo and Cuba reiterated, before the members of the UN Committee of 24 (C24), their position in support of the United Nations political process aimed at achieving a political, just and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Speaking at the C24 Regional Seminar for the Pacific held from May 24 to 26 in Bali, the representative of Chile stressed that the issue of the Moroccan Sahara ” must be resolved by peaceful means, primarily through the various mechanisms established in the Charter of the United Nations and in accordance with international law, in order to achieve a just and lasting solution, in accordance with the various relevant resolutions of this organization, including those emanating from the security Council« .

In this context, he highlighted the efforts made by Morocco to achieve a lasting political solution and compromise to the artificial conflict around the Moroccan Sahara.

For his part, the representative of Indonesia expressed his country’s support for the efforts of the Secretary-General to l’ON aimed at advancing the political process towards a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.

He also commended the work done by the UN SG’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, including the visits he made to the region in 2022, while supporting the calls of the Security Council for a realistic, pragmatic and lasting solution to this regional conflict.

For his part, the representative of Congo reiterated his country’s support for United Nations action to promote a political solution to this regional dispute, stressing the importance of the parties continuing to invest more in order to achieve a just and lasting political solution, the aim being to put a definitive end to this artificial conflict.

The representative of Cuba pleaded for a political solution acceptable between the parties.
