UN calls for urgent aid for flood victims in Yemen

Aden – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen called for urgent assistance to areas affected by floods in the governorates of Hodeidah and Hajjah (west) during the past three days.

The office stated in a post on the X platform that dozens of people lost their lives due to the heavy rains that the country witnessed in recent days, in addition to severe material damage to homes and infrastructure.

The office made an urgent appeal to donor countries to provide aid to those affected by the floods in Yemen.

A Yemeni government report stated that “5,583 displaced families in the governorates of Hodeidah and Hajjah were affected by the floods that hit the two governorates” between Tuesday and Thursday.

The report added that “the floods flooded large areas of agricultural land, destroying crops, and swept away a number of mines and brought them to agricultural and populated areas.”

In the past few days, floods have hit several governorates, especially Al Hudaydah, Taiz and Hajjah (west), leading to the death of 45 people and the loss of 12 others, in addition to the displacement of thousands and the damage of more than 93 thousand, according to statistics issued on Thursday evening by the Yemeni Red Crescent Society.

On Thursday, the government also issued an “urgent distress call” to international donors to help it deal with the damage caused by floods that have killed dozens of people and displaced thousands of families.

For days, the amount of heavy rain has increased in several governorates, causing human losses and great damage.

Yemen suffers from a severe weakness in infrastructure, which has made the effects of the floods increase the tragedy of the population, who complain about the fragility of basic services due to the repercussions of a civil war that began about 10 years ago.
