UN calls for easing tensions in Middle East, but Israel claims right to retaliate

During an emergency session of the UN Security Council, requested by Israel, it concluded with a call for Preventing escalation in the Middle Eastwhich was even joined by Iran.

However, Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan responded that no one had the right to ask his country to “sit back”“following the drone and missile attack launched by Iran on Saturday night against Israel and the territories it occupies in Palestine and Syria, adding: “We are a nation of lions.”

Both Erdan and Iranian representative Saeed Iravani accused each other of being the main actor in regional destabilization. For the Israeli, Iran has filled the region with “proxies” (deputy agents) who tirelessly seek its destruction from Yemen, Lebanon or Syria through allied militias.

Iravani recalled the many Security Council resolutions ignored by Israel in the Palestinian conflict and the powers that Israel gives itself to intervene extraterritorially, such as when it attacked the Iranian Consulate in Damascus on April 1, killing 13 people (seven of them Iranians) without the international community reacting, the Iranian lamented.

The role of the United States

The involvement of the United States in the latest attack, acknowledged by Washington and Israel and which consisted of the interception of missiles launched from Iran, had raised the level of concern about the possible extension of the conflict, given the close alliance the US has with Israel.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the United States and our allies – he did not name any other names – for standing by our side and defending us against the regime of the Ayatollahs,” Erdan said.

Minutes later, the Iranian representative said that his country “has no intention of entering into conflict with the United States in the region” and has demonstrated “commitment to peace, as well as restraint” after verifying the involvement of the United States in the interception of Iranian drones and missiles.

The diplomat warned that if the United States went further and launched an operation against Iranian citizens or interests, “we will use our inherent right to respond in a proportionate manner.”

For a de-escalation with different nuances

Calls to avoid escalation, starting with the Secretary General, Antonio Guterres -who requested to speak at this extraordinary Sunday session- and continued with Russia, China and the United States, usually at odds on almost everything.

Guterres said that “neither the region nor the world can afford another war,” He stressed three times the “common responsibility” of the international community to prevent an escalation between Iran and Israel, achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, guarantee the release of hostages held by Hamas and prevent a deterioration of violence in the West Bank.

The Russian ambassador, who also called for calm, He did not fail to underline “the hypocrisy and double standards (of the Security Council), which are almost embarrassing to watch,” given the fact that the attack against Israel merited an urgent session even on a Sunday, but this did not happen when Russia requested a similar one after Israel’s bombing of the Damascus consulate.
