Umarkot blasphemy: Accused doctor dies in alleged police encounter

Sindh of District Mirpur Khas The police On Thursday, the accused named for posting insulting content on social media was killed in a ‘police encounter’ in Umarkot district.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mirpur Khas Captain (Rtd) Asad Ali Chaudhry said that this incident took place last night in the Sindhi police station of Mirpur Khas district.

According to Captain (retd) Asad Ali Chaudhry: ‘When the police of Sindhri police station reached the police picket after a routine patrol, two armed men on a motorcycle started firing on the police party.’

He said that in the retaliatory fire of the police, one accused was injured and another died. The accused who died when the body was shifted to the hospital was identified as Dr. Shah Nawaz, the named accused in the blasphemy case.

When the Assistant Superintendent was asked about the details of the accused injured in the police firing, he replied: ‘I do not know the name of the accused and where he is now.’

According to Captain (retd) Asad Ali Chaudhry, the body of the accused has been sent to Umarkot with the police in the morning.

Elder Wadiro Qasim Sand, a resident of village Jahenro, told Independent Urdu on telephone: ‘In the morning, the police came to the village with the body, but the people of the village forced the police to take the body back.

After that, the police took the body with them. Now I don’t know what happened.’

Independent Urdu contacted Assistant Superintendent of Police (SSP) Umarkot Asif Raza but he refused to comment.

According to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Umarkot Naveed Larak, ‘The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the accused allegedly posted derogatory content on Facebook. Against which a large number of people gathered in Umarkot city and protested.

“Agitating people set the police mobile on fire and vandalized the accused’s clinic.”

According to Naveed Lark: ‘Umarkot police contacted the Ulemas taking immediate notice and registered a case under Section 295 C (blasphemy) of the Pakistan Penal Code in the case of Imam Sabir Ali Soomro of Zakariya Masjid.’

After this incident, a shutterdown strike was held in front of the press club in Umarkot city on Wednesday to arrest the accused.

Apart from Umarkot city, protests were held in various cities including Dhoronaru, Nabi Sir Road in the district.

The issue of blasphemy has been very sensitive in Pakistan and in some cases people take the law into their hands and try to target the accused themselves.

According to the law of Pakistan, if the charge of blasphemy is proved, this crime is punishable by death.

Last week, a 52-year-old accused of blasphemy, Abdul Ali alias Sakhi Lala, was shot dead by a police officer in the police station in Quetta.

Reuters reported on Thursday that the family of Abdul Ali, who was killed on charges of blasphemy, has forgiven the police officer who killed him.
