Umarkot alleged police encounter: Civil society demands judicial commission to probe

Various organizations in Karachi protested on Saturday and demanded a judicial inquiry over the alleged death of Dr. Shah Nawaz, the accused in the Umarkot blasphemy case, in an alleged encounter with the Mirpurkhas police.

Addressing a joint press conference at the Karachi Press Club today, human rights activists termed the Mirpurkhas police encounter as ‘fake’.

Members of civil society comprising various organizations rejected the inquiry committee formed by the Sindh Interior Ministry and demanded a judicial commission.

They have demanded to register a murder case against DIG Mirpur Khas and other involved officers.

Human rights and civil society activists participating in the press conference rejected the police inquiry committee formed by Sindh Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Linjar and demanded a judicial inquiry by a serving High Court judge.

In the press conference, representatives of National Commission for Human Rights, Sindh Human Rights Defenders Network, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, National Trade Union Federation and organizations held a joint press conference. After which a protest demonstration was also held outside the press club.

Later Umarkot and Mirpurkhas were killed in a joint fake encounter by the police. This fact was also admitted by Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah in the Sindh Assembly that on his instructions SSP Umarkot had gone to Karachi to arrest the accused.

Ali Pulh Advocate demanded that the statement of Syed Sardar Ali Shah be recorded as a witness before the police under Section 161 CrPC and before the Magistrate under Section 164 CrPC.

He demanded that a case be registered against the police officers under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code (murder) and justice be provided to the family of the victim.

“Mushir nama (arrest memo) prepared by Umarkot police in Karachi should be brought before the public to know who was involved in the arrest of the accused from Karachi and to whom the custody of the accused was given and who made the fake encounter. ‘

He said that he is in touch with Dr. Shahnawaz’s mother and five children who have given a video statement on social media that the police betrayed them and killed their loved one who had surrendered.

Speaking at the press conference, women’s rights activist Shireen Asad said: “The police have condemned the nexus of the elected member of the National Assembly of Sindh’s ruling party Pakistan People’s Party and religious extremists, who are praising this serious incident.” are

“We demand Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and MNA Asifa Bhutto to take action against MNA Pir Ameer Ali Shah, who garlanded the accused police officers in Mirpurkhas.”

Ali Pulah appealed to the embassies of the European Union, America, Canada, Australia and other Western and developed countries not to give scholarships or educational opportunities or visas to police officers involved in fake encounters and who do not respect humanity.

The civil society announced protests across Sindh and appealed to bar associations to join the movement.

Allegation of blasphemy and alleged police encounter

On Monday, September 16, after allegedly blasphemous material was posted on a Facebook profile in the name of Dr. Shah Nawaz of Umarkot Hospital, agitators staged a violent protest in the city and burnt a police mobile.

In the intervening night of September 18 and 19, the news of the death of Dr. Shah Nawaz in an alleged police encounter in the limits of Sindri police station of Mirpur Khas came to light.

When his body was brought to his village Jahanro near Umarkot, the local people did not allow him to bury it. After that, the body will be taken to many cities, but the agitators did not allow the burial.

After which the video of burning the body was seen viral on social media.

Independent Urdu contacted Assistant Superintendent of Police (SSP) Umarkot Asif Raza several times to confirm the news of Dr. Shah Nawaz’s body being cremated, but he did not confirm or deny the cremation.

Alleged competition, 10 officials including DIG Mirpur Khas suspended

Sindh Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hasan-ul-Najjar suspended DIG Mirpur Khas, SSP Mirpur Khas and SHO Sindhri on Friday over the incident.

IG Sindh today issued a notification transferring Assistant Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mirpur Khas Captain (Rtd) Asad Ali Chaudhry and asked him to report to Central Police Office Karachi.

In his place, additional charge of Mirpurkhas was handed over to Assistant Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tharparkar Shabbir Ahmed Sithar.

Apart from this, various police officers and officials of Mirpur Khas district were also suspended.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mirpur Khas Captain (retd) Asad Ali Chaudhry, who was suspended yesterday, has been appointed as Assistant Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tharparkar Shabir Ahmad Sithar, who has taken additional charge of Mirpur Khas district. And the officials were suspended.

According to the notification, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sindhri Police Station Inspector Niaz Muhammad Khoso, Police Sub-Inspector of Police (SIP) Hidayatullah of Central Investigation Agency (CIA) Mirpurkhas were suspended.

Apart from this, among the suspended officials are Head Constable Lakhmir of Sindhri Police Station, Constable Allah Jurio, Constable Muhammad Siddique, Constable Nadir Parvez of Central Investigation Agency (CIA) Mirpurkhas, Constable Ghulam Qadir and Farman Ali.

According to the notification, suspended police officers and officials were ordered to report to the police line Mirpurkhas. N
