UltiMaker Launches S7: What’s New?

After the S3 and S5 comes the S7. That is the type designation of the new UltiMaker. The UltiMaker S7 is the first new 3D printer that the merger group is launching.

UltiMaker has maintained the concept of the S5 when developing the new 3D printer, which the company says is now familiar to more than 25,000 customers worldwide. The improvements are therefore in a number of new features, which are appreciated by two beta testers from the material sector.

Better adhesion first layer; optimal use of the entire building volume

One of the innovations is the flexible print bed, which makes removing a print easier.

Auto bed leveling

One of the new features is that the flexible print bed makes it easier to remove the prints. The auto leveling function of the print bed has been improved. Due to the more advanced leveling of the platform, the first layer in particular adheres better to the bed. Something that igus, which was one of the first to test the UltiMaker S7, noticed. “We saw that the new bed leveling system on the S7 really helps us to print high-precision parts with the right mechanical properties using our materials,” says AM Development Engineer Niklas Eutebach from igus.

Optimal use of volume

In terms of volume, the S7 is just as large as the S5: 330 by 240 by 300 mm. UltiMaker does say that the construction volume of the S7 can be used more optimally due to the improved temperature control. This is partly because the filters of the Air Manager are now fully integrated. Polymaker, producer of 3D printing materials, has also already tested the S7 and has particularly noticed the optimal use of the entire building volume. Polymaker has printed a mold for a race car spoiler with a carbon-filled filament. “This part is regarding the size you can print on the S7,” says Luke Taylor, Marketing Manager. “It has some sharp corners, so I thought we might test the adhesion on the new flexplate.” He’s excited regarding how the CoPa material behaves in the S7 when you’re printing really big parts.

Six filament rolls automatically change

In the S7 Pro Bundle, the 3D printer can be combined with the UltiMaker Material Station. It can store up to six spools of filament under controlled humidity. The coils are changed automatically. The UltiMaker S7 is compatible with more than 200 materials from the UltiMaker ecosystem. Cura remains the slicing software.
