ULPGC cut-off marks: more than 12 for Medicine, Nursing, Biomedical and two double degrees

Saturday, July 13, 2024, 02:00

While this is the first list of place allocation and therefore provisional, five of the 43 degrees offered by the **University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC)** for new students, requiring more than a 12 to enter, have received 11,200 pre-registrations this year. The most demanding is the **Double Degree in Translation and Interpretation: English-German and English-French**, with a minimum score of 13,384. This high cutoff is explained by the limited number of places offered each year, only a dozen. Following closely is **Medicine**, which requires a minimum grade of 12.860 for new students. This is the grade of the 150th student assigned a place at the ULPGC for the 2024-25 academic year. Medicine continues to be one of the most sought-following courses at the ULPGC, with 2,200 students pre-registering for the upcoming academic year, equating to 14 students vying for each available spot.

The newly offered **Double Degree in Primary Education and Early Childhood Education**, with only 30 places available, received 251 pre-registrations. The final spot was assigned to a student with a score of 12.620, making it the third most demanding qualification at the public university of Gran Canaria.

**Nursing** on the capital island is the fourth most demanding degree, with 150 places offered for which 1,056 students registered this year. A minimum grade of 12.101 is needed to secure a place. And the degree that debuted last year, **Biomedical Engineering**, offering 50 registrations, has become the fifth most demanding with a minimum score of 12,060.

In all cases, except for Nursing and the new degree (due to its absence last year), the official cutoff marks for these degrees and the double degree were considerably lower last year when the final list was released. Notably, the final cut-off score for Biochemical Engineering was more than one point lower than the current provisional mark.

Degrees Requiring More than 10

Of the 49 degrees offered by the ULPGC, 43 are bachelor’s degrees and six are double degrees. In addition to the previously mentioned degrees requiring more than a 12, **Engineering Physics and Mathematics** falls in this category, with a demanding cutoff of 11.784. This degree, which also started last year and offers around fifty places, closed enrollment that year with a minimum score of 8.963.

**Nursing** in Lanzarote (11,627) and Fuerteventura (11,460) consistently holds the top positions of the degrees requiring the highest scores to enter, followed by **Physiotherapy** (11,390) and **Veterinary Medicine** (11,375). In Veterinary Medicine, which offers only 72 places for new students, 649 students pre-registered.

**Early Childhood and Primary Education** also require more than a 10, specifically 10.612 for the former and 10.919 for the latter. These are slightly higher marks on the provisional list compared to the final list from last year. Notably, neither degree required a score exceeding 10 to enter last year. In Primary Education, 477 students registered, more than double the 190 places offered.

Degrees With Lower Cutoff Scores

In the case of **Physical Activity and Sports Sciences**, which is opening 100 registrations for the next academic year, received 570 pre-registrations this year. This has slightly increased the required grade to almost 10, specifically 9.737, almost two points more than last year on the final cutoff list.

**Law**, despite receiving more pre-registrations (471) than places (450), maintains a cutoff score of 5.

Degrees Previously Entered With a 5 That Now Require Higher Scores

When students take the Baccalaureate Assessment tests (EBAU), they feel the pressure of the cutoff mark for their chosen degree. For some, traditionally a score of 5 was enough to enter. This was the case last year for English-German Translation and Interpretation, Marine Sciences, Computer Engineering, Social Work, Mechanical Engineering, and Data Science and Engineering. However, on the provisional list of cutoff marks for the next academic year, all of these degrees have seen an increase in required scores. English-German now requires a score of 9.417, and Marine Sciences 8.076. Social Work also sees an increase of nearly three points, reaching 7.930. Data Engineering has a cutoff of 7.330, while Mechanics and Computer Science stand at 6.344 and 6.358, respectively.

The Most Demanding Degree in Spanish Universities

The double degree in Physics and Mathematics, with a cutoff mark of around 13.8 out of 14, is the most demanding in the 2024-2025 academic year, followed by Medicine, Nursing, International Relations, and Computer Science. Among the highest cutoff marks made public yesterday by public universities, still provisional, are the double degree studies. These qualifications change each academic year as they depend on the places offered and the number of applications received. The lower the supply and the greater the demand, the higher the grade will be, reports Efe.

In the Community of Madrid, the double degree in Mathematics-Physics at the Complutense University, with a score of 13.736, registers the highest cutoff mark in this year’s University Access Evaluation, followed by Law-International Relations at the Rey Juan Carlos University (RJC), with 13.554 out of 14.

Similarly in Catalonia, the double degree in Physics and Mathematics taught at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the University of Barcelona (UB), with a limited offer of 20 places, is once once more the degree with the highest cutoff mark, followed by Medicine at the UB.

The highest score in Catalonia is for Physics and Mathematics at the UAB, with 13.438, and for the same degree at the UB, with 13.192. Medicine at the UB, with 12.946 as an entry requirement, occupies third place in the total.

Once once more, the most popular studies are in the health field, such as Medicine, Nursing, and Dentistry, although the inclusion of Law, Business Administration, and Architecture is also notable.

Biomedical degrees have once once more been the most in-demand at the University of Salamanca: Medicine, with 6,031 applications, is in first place, followed by Nursing with 5,537. The pre-registration statistics generally reflect an increase in the cutoff marks for access to bachelor’s and double bachelor’s degrees.

ULPGC’s Most Competitive Programs for the 2024-2025 Academic Year

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has released its provisional list of cut-off scores for the 2024-2025 academic year. With 11,200 pre-registrations across 43 degree programs, competition for spots is fierce, particularly for coveted programs. This year, five degrees require more than a 12 out of 14 for admission.

Top Programs with Highest Entry Requirements

The most demanding program is the double degree in Translation and Interpretation: English-German and English-French, requiring a minimum score of 13.384. This high cut-off score reflects the limited number of places available each year (only a dozen).

Following closely is Medicine, a highly competitive field, which requires a minimum grade of 12.860 for entry. With 2,200 students pre-registering for the program, there are 14 students vying for every place offered.

The new Double Degree in Primary Education Early Childhood Education is the third most demanding, with a minimum score of 12.620. This program, offering only 30 places, received 251 pre-registrations.

Nursing on the capital island ranks fourth with a minimum grade of 12.101, while Biomedical Engineering, a program launched last year, rounds out the top five with a minimum score of 12.060.

It’s important to note that the final cut-off marks may differ slightly from these provisional figures. For example, last year, the cut-off scores for Biochemical Engineering and other top programs were significantly lower following final enrollment.

Programs Requiring a Score Above 10

In addition to the highly competitive programs mentioned above, 14 of the 49 degrees offered by the ULPGC require a score exceeding 10 out of 14.

Programs with a Minimum Score Above 10:

Program Minimum Score
Engineering Physics and Mathematics 11.784
Nursing (Lanzarote) 11.627
Nursing (Fuerteventura) 11.460
Physiotherapy 11.390
Veterinary Medicine 11.375
Early Childhood Education 10.612
Primary Education 10.919

It is worth noting that the minimum scores for Early Childhood and Primary Education have increased slightly from last year’s final list, where neither program required a score exceeding 10.

Programs with Cut-off Scores Near or Below 10

Several programs at the ULPGC have cut-off scores near or below 10. For example, Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, offering 100 places, received 570 pre-registrations this year. The provisional minimum score for this program is 9.737, an increase from last year, but still below 10.

Law, despite receiving more pre-registrations than places offered (471 out of 450), has a minimum score of 5.

Programs with Significant Cut-off Increase from Last Year

While certain programs typically require a minimum score of 5 for entry, this past year saw some programs increase their cut-off scores. Programs that previously accepted students with a score of 5 now require higher scores.

Programs with Increased Entrance Requirements:

Program Minimum Score (Previous Year) Minimum Score (Current Year)
Translation and Interpretation (English-German) 5 9.417
Marine Sciences 5 8.076
Social Work 5 7.930
Data Science and Engineering 5 7.330
Mechanical Engineering 5 6.344
Computer Engineering 5 6.358

This increase in entry requirements across these programs illustrates the growing competition for university enrollment.

National Trends in Cut-off Scores

The ULPGC’s cut-off scores reflect a national trend in Spain’s higher education system. The country’s most demanding program for the 2024-2025 academic year is the double degree in Physics and Mathematics, requiring a score of 13.8 out of 14.

Other highly competitive programs across Spain include Medicine, Nursing, International Relations, and Computer Science. Double degree programs often have the highest cut-off scores, reflecting limited places and high demand.

The health sector continues to be highly popular in Spain. Medicine, Nursing, and Dentistry are among the most in-demand programs nationwide. However, subjects like Law, Business Administration, and Architecture also attract significant numbers of applicants.

Key Takeaways

The ULPGC’s provisional cut-off scores for the 2024-2025 academic year highlight the competitive nature of university enrollment. Students aiming for the most popular programs, particularly those in the health field, should be prepared for rigorous competition. Students interested in pursuing a double degree should be aware of the limited places and high cut-off scores typically associated with these programs.
