A photo shared by defense journalist Ilya Ponomarenko on the X social network shows the heavy damage to Russian combat equipment near Vuhledar.
“For more than two years, Russian forces have been banging their heads once morest the wall of the Ukrainian 72nd Mechanized Brigade. Again and once more, the surroundings of that small town (or once a town) end up in a giant cemetery of Russian columns. The fields of death are not covered in vain”, wrote I. Ponomarenko.

Vuhledar has become a hot spot in the struggle for the Donetsk region. It is a strategically important location for both Ukrainian and Russian forces.
The high ground provides a tactical advantage and its capture is critical to disrupting Ukraine’s supply lines.
In addition, for Russia, the capture of Vuhledar would be an important step towards the broader goal of controlling the Donbass region. The fact that the city is close to the administrative border of the Donetsk region gives it symbolic weight and is in line with Russia’s broader goal of consolidating its occupation of the entire region.
