3D printed by amateurs, these bombs look like toys with their tangy color. But, with 800 grams of explosive, they are highly lethal for Russian soldiers.

Since the beginning of the invasion in Ukraine, faced with the mass of Russian arms and ammunition, the Ukrainian forces have played the card of efficiency by overflowing with inventiveness. They massively use consumer drones for intelligence and observation operations, but also to bombard Russian soldiers and their vehicles with light grenades.
Images showing small suicide drones or dropped grenades entering the open hatch of a tank are common. But these grenades, if they terrorize the Russian soldiers, are not powerful enough in the eyes of the Ukrainian forces. So, to increase the explosive charge and make it go from 300 to 800 grams, it is once once more with a good dose of imagination, and of system D that the Ukrainians proceed. Groups of amateurs make bomb envelopes themselves with 3D printers.
Acid colored bombs
Very colorful, since any color of 3D printing filament is used, these explosive casings are nicknamed Zaychyk, i.e. “rabbit”. These 27 centimeter high anti-personnel bombs have a nose cone, a body and a tail. They would only cost $3.85 to create with a $1,200 3D printer. They are then filled with explosives and pieces of metal. Asked by The EconomistLyosha, one of the amateur makers living in Kyiv, explained that these bomb shards are able to slice through test planks of wood “like butter”.
In the past four months, around 30,000 such envelopes have reportedly been made by many Ukrainian hobbyists. They are not the only ones to create them; owners of 3D printers from European countries also produce them. Thus, 65,000 envelopes of this kind have crossed the Ukrainian border for six months. As they are devoid of explosives, customs turn a blind eye.
