Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s Visit to Prague and NATO Summit: Clear Signal for Ukraine’s Membership and Post-War Reconstruction

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj traveled to Prague yesterday following his visit to Bulgaria. He spoke at a press conference with his Czech counterpart Petr Pavel regarding the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius. This should focus on real content and a “clear signal” for Ukraine’s membership in the military alliance. “We need that motivation. We need honesty in our relationships,” Zelenskyy said.

The talks in Prague would also cover continued support for Ukraine, which has been resisting the Russian invasion for almost a year and a half, and post-war reconstruction. Former NATO general Pavel visited Kiev in April with his Slovakian colleague Zuzana Caputova. He has been at the head of the EU and NATO member state Czech Republic since the beginning of March.

Zelenskyy’s visit comes shortly before the NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11-12. “Ukraine is expecting a clear signal from NATO,” stressed Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala recently. One must strive for the strongest possible support – including an accession perspective for the future.

The Czech Republic’s liberal-conservative government is seen as a staunch supporter of Kiev. In Prague, people referred to their own negative experiences with the invasion of the Warsaw Pact countries in August 1968 in what was then Czechoslovakia. The last Soviet soldiers left the country in 1991.

Meeting with Erdogan expected

Today Selenskyj is expected in Turkey. The Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported that he would meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. There was initially no confirmation from the Ukrainian side. According to Anadolu, the meeting will deal, among other things, with the grain agreement, which expires on July 17.
