Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that his army needed more time to prepare for a counterattack aimed at repelling Russian forces.
“It is unacceptable to launch the attack now because many lives will be lost,” he said in an interview broadcast by the BBC on Thursday.
He stated in the interview: “With what we have now, we can move forward, and we will succeed. But we will lose a lot of lives. I think this is unacceptable. So we need to wait, we still need more time.”
It was expected weeks ago to launch a Ukrainian offensive once morest the Russian invasion.
Ukraine receives advanced weapons from the West, including tanks and armored vehicles, in addition to training its forces while preparing to launch a counterattack.
The Kremlin forces have established themselves in the eastern regions of Ukraine, with multi-layered defense lines that reach a depth of 20 kilometers.
Kiev’s counterattack is likely to encounter minefields and anti-tank trenches, among other obstacles.
