(CNN) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied on Sunday that the city of Pakhut, in eastern Ukraine, had fallen to Russian forces, according to Ukrainian presidential spokesman Sergei Nikiforov.
This came in Zelensky’s remarks to reporters, in response to a question regarding whether he believes that Bakhmut is still under the control of Kiev and regarding allegations of Russia’s seizure of the city, where he said: “I don’t think so.”
His office later explained to CNN that the Ukrainian president was referring to Russian claims that it had captured the city of Bakhmut, with Nikiforov saying that “the president denied (Russia’s takeover) of Bakhmut.”
On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Wagner’s mercenaries and the Russian armed forces following they claimed control of the city of Bakhmut, according to a statement from the Kremlin that used the word “Artimovsk”, which is the Soviet-Russian name for the city of Bakhmut.
