Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday that he had ordered the expulsion of Georgia’s ambassador to Kiev, in protest at the deteriorating health of former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, who also holds Ukrainian citizenship, and who appeared on the same day in Tbilisi very weak.
Zelensky said on his channel on the Telegram application, “Today I asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Georgian ambassador, inform him of our strong protest, and ask him to leave Ukraine within 48 hours for talks with his capital,” once more demanding Tbilisi to hand over “Saakashvili to Kiev and” save this the man”.
Concerns regarding the health of imprisoned former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili have increased following he appeared recently on television, in scenes in which he appeared very weak and emaciated.
Saakashvili, 55, who ruled Georgia from 2004 to 2013, went into exile for 8 years, then returned in 2021 to his country, where he was imprisoned.
Saakashvili, who is currently 55 years old, is currently imprisoned in Georgia, but he holds Ukrainian citizenship.
And the Ukrainian president had previously written on Twitter: “Saakashvili is being slowly killed,” calling for his release.
Referring to the war in Ukraine, Saakashvili said earlier: “I am absolutely convinced of our victory. But if I don’t survive even the very near victory my heart will be buried in Kiev. It belongs to Ukraine.”
Saakashvili lost the 2013 elections in Georgia, left the country and was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for abuse of power.
