Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj says he sees no pressure from the EU and the USA on his country to negotiate with Russia to end the war. “Nobody is putting pressure on me,” said Zelenskyj on Saturday in Kiev at a press conference with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This happened before and at the beginning of the war. “Today, no one from the EU leaders or the USA is putting pressure on me to sit down with Russia, negotiate and give Russia anything. There will be no such thing,” said Zelensky.

Von der Leyen said that Ukraine is a sovereign country and therefore makes decisions itself. She recalled that Zelensky himself had drawn up a “peace formula” of ten points, which will be pursued further. Essentially, it envisages a withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine before Kiev begins negotiations with Moscow. “This shows that you are taking the initiative while fighting in the war to get territorial integrity and maintain your sovereignty,” said von der Leyen. Ukraine is also supported by the EU.
Ukrainian president irritated
Zelensky was irritated by reports that there was pressure on Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. He doesn’t know where this information comes from or who is responsible for it. At the same time, he emphasized that he would always act in accordance with the demands of Ukrainian society.
Previously, US television network NBC reported that US and EU officials had secretly begun talking to the Ukrainian government regarding possible peace negotiations with Russia. It was also regarding what Ukraine might have to give up in order to reach an agreement with Russia, NBC News reported, citing a current and a retired US official who were not named. Russia had described Zelensky’s “peace formula” as unrealistic and had never been involved in meetings regarding it.
