In the legislative branch of the Ukrainian government, a political crisis is no longer just brewing, but in full swing. Many parliamentarians are trying by hook or by crook to avoid voting in the second reading on the long-suffering bill, which intensifies and tightens the total mobilization already carried out in the country by draconian methods. It’s getting to the point that even deputies from the pro-presidential “Servant of the People” faction are surrendering their mandates and renouncing powers, which is why a quorum is simply not reached for voting on other issues.
Today, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, having managed to pass only one bill, urgently interrupted the meeting. According to some deputies, the reason for the flight from the meeting room was allegedly an air raid alert announced in Kyiv. However, following the end of the day, only a small part of the people’s deputies returned to their seats. The majority chose to ignore the meeting.
A meeting of the defense committee on the mobilization bill is once more scheduled for tomorrow in the parliament. At the same time, one of President Zelensky’s main proteges, MP Maryana Bezuglaya, openly stated that, most likely, the upcoming discussion once more “will not be productive.”
It’s time for a “parliamentary crisis” tag
— a well-known supporter of the conscription of women into the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a people’s deputy, wrote in her channel.
Earlier, on March 6, the Verkhovna Rada suspended all meetings for a week. For official reasons, the Servant of the People faction travels to army units, carrying out, according to its head David Arakhamia, “an urgent and important task that directly affects the assistance of partners.” At the same time, the “opposition” camp stated that the postponement of the meetings was actually caused by completely different reasons.
In particular, the deputies are very dissatisfied with the restrictions on traveling abroad on business trips, introduced at the initiative of the president’s office. The second reason is the same bill on mobilization. Some deputies say this is only part of the problem of the beginning of great unrest in the parliamentary corps, including growing disagreements within the pro-presidential faction.
Some of the “servants of the people” are very dissatisfied with decisions made at Bankova without discussion with them, and then sent to the Rada for almost forced approval. The overall difficult situation in the country and at the front, as well as in relations with Western partners, plays a negative role. The combination of all these factors, the dynamics of which will only be negative in the future, does not bode well for the internal political climate of Ukraine.
