The wife of Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov has been poisoned. The spokesman for the national military intelligence service GRU, Andriy Yusov, confirmed corresponding media reports today. “Yes, I can confirm the information, unfortunately it is true,” said Jusow. According to reports, Marianna Budanow had to be hospitalized following feeling sick for several days.

It was said that she had been poisoned with heavy metals that were unusual in everyday life. Investigations into attempted murder have been started.

GUR responsible for successful counterattacks

According to Budanov, the two have been living together around the clock for security reasons since the Russian invasion more than 21 months ago. The military intelligence service under Budanov is responsible for a number of successful acts of sabotage and assassination attempts in the Russian-occupied territories and Russia itself.

If reports are confirmed that the poisoning of Budanov’s wife was deliberate, it would be the most serious attack on a family member of a senior Ukrainian leader since Moscow’s invasion in February 2022.

Budanov’s popularity in Ukraine increased sharply with Russia’s attack – in the country he is portrayed as a mastermind behind efforts to counter the attacker. He was stylized as a hate figure by Russian state media.
