A Ukrainian military doctor has been in Russian captivity for almost two years. As part of an exchange, she returns to her homeland – and her partner greets her with a proposal. Both served in the same brigade. Accordingly, their commander also responds with emotional words.
On her return from Russian captivity, a Ukrainian military doctor was greeted by her fiancé with a marriage proposal. A video posted on Facebook by the commander of her brigade shows Galyna Fedychyn tying the knot with her fiancé Mykola Gryzenjak. He surprised the military doctor, who spent almost two years as a prisoner in Russia, on her return with a large bouquet of roses and rings.
Fedychyn returned to her homeland on Wednesday as part of a prisoner exchange. She and her fiancé fought together in the 36th Marine Brigade once morest the Russian army in the port city of Mariupol in the spring of 2022. Their commander Serhiy Volynskyj, known as “Volyna”, wrote regarding the video of the kissing couple: “This love has endured trials that can break the strongest.”
The defenders of Mariupol, and especially the fighters of the 36th Marine Brigade, are revered as heroes in Ukraine for withstanding the Russian siege for weeks. Fedychyn became a Russian prisoner of war. They endured two years of separation, but “their hearts never stopped beating to the same rhythm,” wrote Volyna. The chief of staff of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, also congratulated the two on the online service X (formerly Twitter).
In what was probably the largest prisoner exchange since the beginning of the war, a total of more than 400 Ukrainian and Russian soldiers returned to their homeland on Wednesday. It was the first officially announced exchange in almost five months.
