Ukrainian flag hoisted at Chernobyl nuclear power plant where Russian troops withdrew

A Ukrainian flag is hoisted at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, where Russian troops have been withdrawn. It comes one day following the Ukrainian side announced that it had taken over control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant from the Russian military.

According to CNN, the Ukrainian state-owned nuclear power plant operator Energoatom said in a statement on the same day, “Today at 11 am (local time), the flag was raised and the national anthem was sung at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.”

Energoatom added, “All executives and employees of the nuclear power plant, which have ensured the safety of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant under the harsh conditions of occupation since February 24, attended the hoisting ceremony.”

Earlier, on February 24, the first day of the invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces occupied the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It was withdrawn on the 31st of last month.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant suffered the worst nuclear accident in history in April 1986, and all reactors are currently shut down, but spent nuclear fuel is stored in a cooling facility.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on the 1st that the level of radiation in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was normal.
