On Sunday, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy and Foreign Affairs expressed their deep disappointment over Canada’s decision to deliver a Russian turbine, which underwent maintenance at a facility in Canada belonging to the German company “Siemens”, to Berlin.

In a statement posted on the Ministry of Energy’s website, the two ministries called on the Canadian government to reverse its decision. The statement said that the return of the turbine would be tantamount to adjusting the sanctions imposed on Moscow “in accordance with Russia’s whims.”

The turbine is necessary to operate the Russian Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which is used by Russia’s Gazprom to supply Germany with natural gas.

On Saturday, Canada announced that it would send back repaired Russian turbines to Germany. The Canadian government said the move would support Europe’s ability to obtain safe and affordable energy as it continues to wean itself off the use of Russian oil and gas.

The Canadian government will issue a permit to exempt the return of turbines from Russian sanctions. Canada also announced that it would extend sanctions once morest the Russian energy sector to include industrial equipment.
