Nearly 200 people answered the call of the Group for a Switzerland without an army (GSsA), and the Young Socialists to demonstrate peacefully on Wednesday early evening in front of the Russian embassy in Bern. The demonstrators gave a sign in favor of peace and international law, and showed their solidarity for the independence of Ukraine., underlines the Socialist Youth in a press release. The protesters called in particular for a diplomatic and arms-free solution to the conflict on Ukraine’s eastern border.

Call for a boycott of the Nord Stream gas pipeline

A founding member of the GSsA, Jo Lang stressed that Switzerland also had a responsibility to exert diplomatic pressure on Russia. One way to do this would be, for example, a boycott of the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 (note: which should come into operation this year), he proposed in a speech. “War is never a solution. We must renegotiate arms control and disarmament measures to prevent a global arms race and guarantee peace,” added Ronja Jansen, president of the Swiss Socialist Youth.

Along with numerous banners, placards and posters, protesters lit candles and placed them in front of the Russian Embassy.

Demonstration also in Zug

The Young Greens, who were also in Bern, had demonstrated earlier, but outside the headquarters of Nord Stream in Zug. On their side, they accused Switzerland and the canton of Zug of shirking their responsibilities. And they also attacked the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which connects Russia to Germany. Young environmentalists have called for its permanent suspension. For them, this book co-finances Russia’s dangerous power games.
