Ukrainian Counteroffensive: Latest Updates, Western Support, and Putin’s Response

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian counteroffensive continues, apparently with important successes. The US think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports that Kiev’s troops are advancing near Bakhmut. To the north, along the front line from Kupyansk to Kremmina, the Ukrainian army is also said to have gained ground.

Is Kiev’s counteroffensive making better progress now? And will the Ukrainian army make a decisive breakthrough in the coming weeks? How does Putin’s army react?

Alica Jung talks regarding this live on ZDFheute with ex-NATO general Egon Ramms. ZDF reporter Henner Hebestreit describes his impressions from Ukraine. He was there with a Ukrainian special unit near the front in the south of the country. While Ukrainian soldiers are fighting to retake the areas at the front, the terror once morest the Ukrainian civilian population continues unabated. Last night, Kiev reported attacks on the towns of Odradokamyanka, Sumy and Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Zelensky. A total of four people were killed and dozens more injured. An attack on a busy marketplace in the eastern Ukrainian town of Kostiantynivka killed 17 people on Wednesday – one of the deadliest Russian attacks in recent weeks. Western representatives and the UN strongly condemned this attack, Foreign Minister Baerbock described it as an “attack on international law, on humanity.” Ukraine’s military successes depend largely on Western support – the USA plays the largest role in this. The US government announced a new package of long-term aid worth $600 million (€560 million) on Thursday. During a visit to Ukraine, US Secretary of State Blinken had previously promised aid worth 175 million dollars (around 163 million euros) – for demining equipment as well as ammunition for artillery and multiple rocket launchers. The planned delivery of uranium ammunition, which will be fired from Abrams main battle tanks, is controversial. The presidential election will take place in the USA in November 2024. Depending on the outcome, this might have a major impact on future US military aid to Ukraine.
