Ukraine is said to have routed the Russian military in the course of the counter-offensive. The way to the south is thus becoming more and more accessible.
Dachi – In the past few days, there have been increasing reports, especially from the Russian side, that the Ukrainian military is advancing further south. The counter-offensive in the Ukraine war, which got off to a rather slow start, has now been intensified on the east bank of the Dnipro in the Cherson region. Reports by Russian military bloggers on Twitter and Telegram proclaimed attacks on the front lines. The troops are said to have crossed the river, but there are still a few hurdles before Cherson.
front breakthrough? Ukraine apparently crosses the Dnipro River towards Kherson
According to this, the Ukrainian military is said to have entrenched themselves near the Antonivka Bridge northeast of Cherson. Soldiers have been there since the end of last week, crossing the Dnipro in speedboats and firing artillery at the Russian soldiers. The remains of the bridge would have served as cover. Fighting has been ongoing since Saturday, Russian sources said. Officially, the fights and crossing of the Dnipro have not been verified, so that Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
While the crossing of the river is not confirmed, Ukraine’s successful counteroffensive is: “Ukrainian forces have made progress on both the northern and southern flanks,” it was said in the daily intelligence report on the war in Ukraine from the Ministry of Defense in London on June 26. This is also shown by the unverified recordings on Twitter. They should show the shelling in the village of Dachi. A Russian tank is to target the Ukrainian positions at the south end of the Antonivka Bridge to allow the Russians to retreat.

Military: Russia redistributes troops in Ukraine war – Crimea to be held
Russia had already begun attracting parts of its Dnipro troops from the east bank in recent weeks. According to the British secret service, this should strengthen the front at Zaporizhia and Bakhmut. Among them were thousands of soldiers from the 49th Army. With the apparent crossing of the Dnipro, Russia probably also sees the Crimean Peninsula, which was illegally annexed in 2014, in danger. On June 21, the British Ministry of Defense assessed the situation there, where Russia has expanded its defense systems – especially in the area connecting Cherson and Crimea. This shows that Moscow believes Ukraine is capable of a direct attack. “For Russia, maintaining control of the peninsula remains a top political priority,” it said.
Dnipro in the Ukraine War: area following the river is said to be swampy and the Konka Bridge is mined
However, the way south is not that easy. Because many Twitter users assume that the Russian military has mined the Konka Bridge – and will blow it up if Ukraine advances. They have already done so with the Antonivka Bridge, which was badly damaged by fighting, Russian military bloggers reported. The swamp area that follows the Dnipro would also make it more difficult to continue the march, wrote a Twitter user who claims to come from Cherson. Although the terrain is impassable, it is not impossible.

But the counter-offensive is also proving successful in other areas, including around the town of Bakhmut, according to the British Ministry of Defense report. Russia would hardly have the capacity to reinforce its troops along the hundreds of kilometers of front line. Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar announced via Telegram that Ukraine has now liberated 130 square kilometers in the south of the country from Russian occupiers. (hk)
