Ukraine’s massive offensive in Russia: Moscow suffered one of the biggest drone attacks since the start of the war

Kiev.-Russian air defenses shot down 11 drones in Moscow, which suffered one of the largest attacks by enemy unmanned aircraft since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.

This was announced by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Telegram. “Moscow’s multi-layered defence against enemy UAVs made it possible to successfully repel all attacks. This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever,” the Moscow official said.

The first drone heading for Moscow was destroyed in the vicinity of the capital at 3:02 a.m. local time, and the other nine were destroyed over the next hour and a half. All the drones were destroyed because strong defences were built around the capital, Sobyanin added.

Some Russian social media channels shared footage that appeared to show anti-aircraft defenses destroying drones, setting off car alarms on the street.

According to preliminary data, the falling debris did not cause any casualties or material damage.

According to a report by the Russian Ministry of Defense, there were 45 in total. In addition to Moscow, the regions affected by these attacks were Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk, on the border with Ukraine, and Kaluga, southwest of the capital.

In the Kursk region, Russian troops are trying to contain the unprecedented ground offensive launched by the Ukrainian army on August 6.

Ukraine has repeatedly attacked oil and gas infrastructure in Russia since the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in 2022, but drone attacks on the capital are not common.

The previous attempt to attack Moscow with a drone took place on July 11, when an unmanned aircraft was shot down in Stupino, almost 100 kilometers south of the metropolis.

Meanwhile, on the day of the Russian presidential election, March 17, Moscow was attacked by five drones, but they did not reach their target.

In May, Russian authorities said they shot down a drone outside Moscow, prompting restrictions at the city’s two major airports for an hour.

A year earlier, in May 2023, two aircraft were destroyed by air defenses near the Kremlin.Clarín.
