Ukraine is ready to launch its long-awaited counter-offensive. This was stated by Oleksey Danilov, secretary of the Ukrainian National Security Council, in an interview with the British channel BBC. He did not give a specific date, but spoke of “tomorrow, the day following tomorrow or next week”.

The objective of the counter-offensive is to reconquer the Ukrainian territories taken by the Russians. According to Mr. Danilov, the army has no room for error. “This is a historic opportunity that we cannot miss,” he said.

As secretary of Ukraine’s National Security Council, Mr. Danilov is in President Volodimir Zelensky’s war cabinet. In fact, during the interview, he received a phone call from the president to concretely prepare the counter-offensive, the BBC reported.

This counter-offensive has been the subject of speculation for months. But Ukraine would first have waited for its troops to be sufficiently trained and to receive additional military equipment from the West.

“The Russian army having proved ineffective, Putin plays the last card he has”

The stakes are high, as kyiv wants to show it can break through Russian lines and retake territory. According to Mr. Danilov, the counter-offensive will begin when the leaders of the army believe that the chances of success are greatest. “It’s not a question of time, we are always ready to defend our country,” he added. “We must understand that this is a historic opportunity, given by God, for us to become a great independent European country.

In recent months, heavy fighting has taken place around the Ukrainian city of Bakhut and has claimed the lives of many people. The Secretary of State defended this decision. “This is our country, our territory, and we have to defend it. If we left every place, we would end up on the western border, as Putin wanted from the beginning.” According to Danilov, Ukraine “still controls only a small part of the city, we admit that. But we must not forget that Bakhmout played an important role in this war.”

Wagner’s mercenary army leaves the city, leaving their positions to the Russians. “But they are regrouping in three other places. So that doesn’t mean they will stop fighting once morest us,” Danilov warns.
