Ukraine – the deminers

They often look harmless – and yet they are a deadly danger. Unexploded ordnance remnants, mines and booby traps pose a major threat in many regions of Ukraine. There are no exact figures on how many civilian victims have been killed by mines since Russia’s war of aggression. WELTjournal accompanies women in Ukraine who work as deminers. Olena and Tetiana travel the affected areas with their teams, look for clues and also question local witnesses. Risking their lives, they clear streets and important infrastructure points of ordnance residues. The fate of 23-year-old nurse Oksana shows how important the work of the deminers is. On the way home, she lost both her legs in a mine explosion. She is currently in Hamburg for treatment and is working on learning to walk once more with the help of prostheses.

Russian oligarchs – at mercy with Putin

Since the invasion of Ukraine and the European sanctions, Russia’s oligarchs have been in trouble. The EU has frozen nearly €30 billion of its assets and hopes the oligarchs will pressure President Putin to end the war. But it is unclear whether the oligarchs actually have the power to influence Putin. WELTjournal+ shows how Russian oligarchs are trying to protect their assets, luxury residences and mega yachts from EU sanctions. The oligarchs are seen as vassals in Vladimir Putin’s power system. Her select circle is regularly summoned to the Kremlin by the Russian President. Here they are accountable and receive their orders. Boundless loyalty is rewarded, but anyone who questions the system or even breaks away faces death. In all, around fifteen oligarchs have already died in suspicious ways.
