Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 33 years following adopting the country’s declaration of sovereignty, has highlighted Ukraine’s strength in resisting Russia’s war of aggression. “Our country will never give up its sovereignty. That’s clear to everyone in the world,” he said in his daily video message on Sunday evening. Let’s celebrate a free Ukraine. Zelenskyy once more thanked named soldiers who fought for the country.
On July 16, 1990, the Ukrainian parliament passed a document on the independence of the country, which was still part of the Soviet Union at the time. According to the document from that time, the country should have its own army and its own national bank, but should not have nuclear weapons and be non-aligned. Zelenskyi also said in his speech that Ukraine will stand up for its freedom regardless of Russia’s terror.
In 1991 the country declared its independence, which resulted in the collapse of the Soviet Union. Selenskyj sees Ukraine as a role model and pioneer for freedom and democracy in Europe. “Ukraine will ensure real freedom and security from Russian terror across Europe. The security of our continent begins here with Ukraine’s sovereignty and strength.”
