The Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) has asked the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to comment on the participation of Russian referee Sergei Karasev in the annual meeting of referees, the organization said in a letter.
“We are asking you to consider one more comment regarding the information circulated in the media that the Russian referee Sergey Karasev has received an invitation to take part in the annual meeting of football referees. This meeting will take place in September in Switzerland and is an official UEFA event for referees who must be included in the lists to work at matches under the auspices of the organization.

The UAF believes that the invitation of Karasev to the training camp is a misunderstanding.
“We are convinced that this case is unacceptable once morest the backdrop of UEFA’s general policy towards citizens of the Russian Federation, and we believe that the above is the result of a misunderstanding. However, we take this opportunity to ask you to comment on this matter, since any episode of a possible easing of sanctions once morest Russia is critically sensitive for all of us,” the letter says.
The fact that UEFA invited Karasev to the gathering of judges was reported by the RFU communications service on June 30.
44-year-old Karasev has been a FIFA referee since 2010, and has been working at Russian Championship matches since 2008. He also worked at the Champions League, Europa League, World Championships (2018) and European Championships (2016, 2020), Olympic Games (2016). In 2021, he was the main referee of the match for the UEFA Super Cup, which played the English Chelsea and the Spanish Villarreal (1:1, 6:5 on penalties).
Gathering of referees under the auspices of UEFA, to which Karasev was called, will be held from 3 to 6 September in Switzerland.
FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian clubs and national teams from participation in international competitions in February last year due to the situation in Ukraine. Since then, Russian referees have also not been assigned to international matches.
