Ukraine on Wednesday praised NATO for taking a “clear position” on Russia and inviting Finland and Sweden to join the military alliance.
It called on Kyiv to take an “equally strong and active stance towards Ukraine”.
“Today in Madrid, NATO has proven that it can take tough decisions when necessary,” Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter.
“We welcome the clear position on Russia, as well as (regarding) the accession of Finland and Sweden. An equally strong and effective position towards Ukraine will help protect security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region,” he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address to the NATO summit in the Spanish capital, Madrid, that his country needs more advanced funds and weapons.
At the summit, NATO leaders agreed to formally treat Russia as the “largest and most direct threat to the security of Allies,” according to the summit statement.
And Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian President, welcomed the message sent by NATO to Russia.
