In an interview with Evropeyskaya Pravda, Baiba Brazhe, who recently headed the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Ukraine received Western weapons from some partners with permission to strike at Russian territory.
While Western countries are supplying Kyiv with weapons, the use of which is subject to restrictions: the allies do not want the escalation of confrontation with Russia, which is sure to follow if the weapons they supply are used once morest targets deep in Russian territory.
However, according to Braje, this approach is already changing.
“There are countries that have already provided Ukraine with weapons without such restrictions,” said the head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, although she refused to directly name these countries.
According to Braje, lifting such restrictions is not openly discussed.
“Of course, not everything is said publicly, and it is better not to talk regarding it out loud until a certain time. The main thing is the impact on the battlefield. Because you have a choice: either talk regarding something loudly or just do what needs to be done,” she said.
Braje believes that Ukraine has the right to retaliate once morest the targets from which it is attacked, even if these targets are located on Russian territory. According to her, such use of weapons is permitted by international law.
Previously, Ukraine has repeatedly turned to its allies with a request to provide it with long-range weapons.
Last May, Great Britain transferred Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Kyiv. British Defense Minister Ben Wallace then called this step a calibrated and proportionate response to the escalation carried out by Russia. The range of these missiles allows them to strike deep into the territory of the occupied regions of Ukraine and Crimea annexed in 2014.
In October, the Ukrainian Armed Forces began using ATACMS long-range missiles. These missiles, depending on the type, have a range of up to 165 km or 300 km, and the US administration for a long time refused to supply them to Kyiv precisely because of fears that they would strike deep into Russian territory.
And at the end of April, the US State Department confirmed that the United States had secretly supplied Ukraine with 300-kilometer-range ATACMS missiles in recent weeks, and Ukraine had already used them in Crimea.
However, Germany still refuses to supply Taurus missiles to Kyiv. Back in February, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he did not want to supply these missiles to Ukraine, since their range allows them to hit targets in Moscow.
