The Ukrainian authorities alerted residents of the Kurákhov water reservoir area, in the eastern Donetsk regionabout the risk of flooding after Russian troops allegedly damaged that infrastructure.
«The Russians damaged the Kurájove dam. The impact poses a potential threat to residents in the towns of the Vovcha River, both in the Donetsk and Dnipro regions,” explained the governor of Donetsk, Vadim Filáshkin.
Flood risk after Russian attack
According to the official, the river level increased up to 1.2 meters in a section near the dam. So far, no consequences have been reported for residents’ homes, according to the governor.
The destruction of the Kakhovka dam in June 2023, located on the Russian-occupied bank of the Dnieper River in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, caused dozens of deaths, thousands of displaced people and serious material damage, as well as consequences for agriculture and the environment of the area.

**Interview with Governor Vadim Filáshkin about Flood Risks in Eastern Donetsk**
**Editor**: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today, Governor Filáshkin. We understand that the Kurákhov water reservoir area is facing potential flooding due to damage inflicted by Russian troops. Can you elaborate on the extent of the damage?
**Governor Filáshkin**: Thank you for having me. Yes, unfortunately, the Kurájove dam has sustained significant damage as a result of recent attacks. The water level in the Vovcha River has increased by 1.2 meters near the dam, which raises serious concerns for the safety of residents in both the Donetsk and Dnipro regions.
**Editor**: What specific risks do residents face at this moment? Are any evacuation plans being considered?
**Governor Filáshkin**: Right now, the immediate risk is an overflow from the dam due to the increased water levels. While we have not yet reported any direct consequences to residents’ homes, we are actively monitoring the situation and remain in constant communication with local authorities. Evacuations may be necessary if conditions worsen, and we are prepared for that possibility.
**Editor**: This situation might remind many of the catastrophic flooding following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam earlier this year. How does this risk compare?
**Governor Filáshkin**: The Kakhovka dam disaster was indeed a tragic event, leading to loss of life and widespread displacement. We are taking every precaution to prevent a similar outcome here. The situation is different as of now; while we face a threat, swift action and communication can help mitigate the risks for our residents.
**Editor**: What advice do you have for residents living near the affected areas?
**Governor Filáshkin**: I urge residents to stay informed and vigilant. We’ve implemented notification systems to alert them of any changes in the situation. They should prepare for potential flooding by securing important belongings and having an emergency plan in place.
**Editor**: Thank you for your insights, Governor Filáshkin. We hope for the safety of all residents in the affected regions.
**Governor Filáshkin**: Thank you. We are committed to ensuring their safety and will continue to keep the public informed as this situation develops.
