Luzia Tschirky will be reporting for SRF from Russia and Ukraine until January 2024.
The journalist then takes the time to process her experiences in a book.
From January 2024, long-standing SRF correspondent and editor David Nauer will take over the post.
Luzia Tschirky has been reporting for Swiss television SRF since January 2019 from Russia and Ukraine. As a correspondent, the “Journalist of the Year 2021” and “Reporter of the Year 2022” experienced the outbreak of the Ukraine war up close and described the situation on site for the audience in German-speaking Switzerland in countless live broadcasts and contributions. Now the 32-year-old has decided to take a good six-month break and over their experiences to write a book as a correspondent. “In the coming summer she will resume her work at SRF – in which position is still open,” says a press release.
«When Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022, my life changed abruptly. Like millions of other people, there is no going back to my life before the war of aggression,” says Tschirky. In order to be able to close this chapter in her life with a book, she needs time when she is not involved in daily reporting. “I’m convinced it’s the right step and I’m looking forward to new challenges.”
In a “Tagesschau” edition from September 2022, Luzia Tschirky’s appearance caused a stir: “Is everything ok with you?” Asked viewers.
successor already arranged
Gregor Meier, Deputy Editor-in-Chief Video, says: “Your professional, impressive and courageous live broadcasts impressed us all. I fully understand that she wants to process these experiences and record them in book form. I look forward to Luzia Tschirky returning to us next summer.”
Since Luzia Tschirky’s period as a correspondent in Russia would have expired in spring 2025, she will not return to the post following the break. Her successor has already been arranged: from January 2024, David Nauer will initially report on Russia and Ukraine from Vienna. From 2015 to 2021, the 46-year-old was the Russia correspondent for Radio SRF. As a foreign editor, he has also traveled to the war zone several times.
“The war in Ukraine, developments in Russia, the tense relations between East and West: I want to continue to report on these sometimes dramatic developments – whenever possible from on the spot,” says Nauer.
