Expert speculates about “Ukrainian capitulation” after Kursk offensive
11.20pm: The Military expert Carlo Masala spoke in the “Bild” podcast about the Ukrainian offensive and what consequences it could have for Putin and his country. “We are currently experiencing a colossal change in the war. It is simply a fact that we have to acknowledge,” said Masala. The Kursk offensive has not only had a military impact on the war, but also a political one. Masala: “The Ukrainians have now conquered more territory in Russia within six days than Russia has conquered in Ukraine in the last two to three months.” Can Russia stand up to Ukraine? Difficult at the moment, says Masala, because according to the expert, Putin is having problems getting enough soldiers and weapons together. Nevertheless, there could be a “Ukrainian capitulation.” If “the Ukrainian armed forces suffer a crushing defeat in Kursk with massive losses.” If things turn out well for Volodymyr Zelenskyj and his country, the offensive could have succeeded in ensuring that “the continuation of the war could have negative consequences for internal Russian stability.” In other words: Putin could then be stripped of power.
SPD man Stegner angry about Kursk offensive: “War is being brought to Russia”
18:14: For more than a week, Ukraine has been reporting progress in the offensive in the Russian region of Kursk. Just yesterday, Kiev reported the capture of the small town of Sudzha. Kursk borders northeastern Ukraine. Around 1.1 million Russians live there.
Ukraine says it wants to use its advance to put pressure on Russia in particular and thus move closer to peace negotiations.
SPD foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner is now outraged at the progress made by the Ukrainian army. “If what military experts say is true, that this does not promise any decisive military advantages, the war will be brought to Russia. Instead, this war should finally be ended,” he told FOCUS. Germany is supplying Ukraine with weapons for defensive combat, “not to wage war on Russian soil.” Stegner believes that this progress could put Ukraine in a better negotiating position is unfounded. “How long have we been hearing that?”
His traffic light coalition partner and chairman of the Defense Committee, Marcus Faber (FDP), sees things very differently. “With its war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia has turned its own territory into a war zone.” The Ukraine’s relief attack is therefore completely legitimate. “With the Russian attack on Ukraine, the territory of both states is a war zone. The use of weapons is subject to the provisions of international law,” said the FDP politician.
Poland receives European arrest warrant over Nord Stream attack
12.31 pm: In connection with the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea, the Polish public prosecutor’s office has received a European arrest warrant from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office to arrest a suspect. A spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office in Warsaw told the German Press Agency.
The suspect is said to be Volodymyr Z., a Ukrainian citizen who was last in Poland. However, investigators did not find him at his place of residence, said the spokeswoman for the Polish Attorney General’s Office. “The man crossed the border between Poland and Ukraine at the beginning of July.”
This was possible because the German side had not made an entry in the Schengen register, which lists those wanted under a European arrest warrant. “Volodymyr Z. crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border before he was arrested, and the Polish border guards had neither the information nor the basis to arrest him, as he was not listed as a wanted person,” said the spokeswoman.
Suspect goes into hiding – arrest warrant issued against Ukrainian for Nord Stream sabotage
08.49 am: According to media reports, there is now an arrest warrant in the case of the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea almost two years ago. The Federal Prosecutor General obtained this from the Federal Court of Justice, reported “Die Zeit”, ARD and the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. According to this, suspicion falls on a Ukrainian, whose last place of residence was said to be in Poland. According to the reports, he has since gone into hiding. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office was initially unavailable for comment.
The two gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 were damaged and interrupted by several explosions on September 26, 2022. The explosions were registered near the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm and shortly afterwards four leaks were discovered on three of the four lines of the Nord Stream pipelines. Russian natural gas previously flowed to Germany through Nord Stream 1. Nord Stream 2 was not yet in operation due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the political disputes that followed.
According to research by the three media outlets, two other Ukrainian nationals are also suspected of the crime – including a woman. According to the report, they were involved in the attacks. They may have attached the explosives to the pipelines as divers, it was further stated. The information now published is therefore also based on “tips from a foreign intelligence service”.
State of emergency declared in Russian border region of Belgorod
07.19 am: The governor of the Russian border region of Belgorod has declared a state of emergency. The situation in the region remains “extremely difficult and tense” due to shelling by the Ukrainian armed forces, Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Wednesday in the online service Telegram. The state of emergency will be imposed at the “regional level” from Wednesday. He also submitted a motion to declare a federal state of emergency.
Gladkov also said that there had been Ukrainian drone attacks on two villages in the region. Authorities in the Kursk, Voronezh and Bryansk regions also said that drones from Ukraine had been shot down by air defenses during the night.
