This would meet a demand from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has so far rejected EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and has repeatedly criticized the language law.
The new bill aims to delete the passage that restricts the right to use the mother tongue of minorities in class. The law was intended primarily to suppress the Russian language. This step would remove the “poison tooth” of diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and Hungary and might lead to a turning point in the relations between the two countries, the online portal Telex.hu stated.
According to the online portal, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal presented the recommendation to representatives of the Ukrainian minorities on Friday. Schmyhal described the adoption of the modification before the summit as all the more important, as it might decide on the start of Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations, whose biggest opponent is the Hungarian government. If the bill is passed in parliament, it will become clear whether the Hungarian right-wing national ruling party Fidesz was only using the language law as a pretext, according to the online portal Nepszava.hu.
The law modification would be proof that Ukraine had decided on reform and understood that the EU’s expectations had to be met, László Zubánics, chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Association in Ukraine (UMDSZ), emphasized to Telex.hu. On Monday, EU Council President Charles Michel will arrive in Budapest for negotiations with Orbán. According to Telex.hu, it will certainly also be regarding the start of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine.
