Ukraine Strikes Back: 96 Russian Drones and Missiles Targeted as Zelenskyy Calls for More Support

KYIV, Ukraine — In a significant escalation of hostilities, Moscow launched a coordinated attack on Ukraine during the early hours of Sunday, deploying a total of 96 drones along with a guided air missile, according to reports from Ukrainian officials.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that in a show of defensive strength, 66 of the incoming drones were successfully intercepted and destroyed during this overnight surge. Additionally, the missile was also neutralized. However, the fate of 27 drones remains uncertain as they were “lost” over diverse regions, possibly due to electronic jamming tactics employed by Ukrainian forces. Notably, one of the drones managed to breach Ukrainian airspace, making its way into Belarus.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that over the course of the previous week, Russia had unleashed a staggering wave of assaults comprising approximately 900 guided aerial bombs, alongside 500 drones and 30 missiles targeted at various Ukrainian sites.

In a desperate plea on social media platform X, Zelenskyy urged Ukraine’s international allies to provide “long-range capabilities for our security,” contending that these persistent attacks would have been greatly diminished had Ukraine received adequate support from the global community. Officials in Kyiv continue to await responses from Western partners regarding their crucial requests for long-range weaponry capable of striking strategic targets within Russian territory, specifically aimed at preempting potential threats from camps housing North Korean military personnel.

The Ukrainian President also stressed the urgent need for partners to implement “truly effective sanctions” designed to obstruct Russia’s capacity to import essential components necessary for drone and missile manufacturing. This call to action followed his earlier address on Saturday, in which he highlighted that more than 2,000 drones and missiles, many of which included components sourced from Western nations, had been unleashed against Ukraine throughout October. He underscored the importance of enforcing stringent export controls to close off avenues for sanctions evasion.

In a reported response from Russia, the Defense Ministry asserted that their forces successfully intercepted and shot down 19 Ukrainian drones during the same overnight period across three of its regions: 16 in the Rostov region, two in the Belgorod region, and one in the Volgograd region.

A tragic consequence of the ongoing conflict was reported when regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed that a man lost his life on Sunday due to a Ukrainian drone strike in the Belgorod region.
