Ukraine spends Christmas in the dark

Most of Ukraine’s infrastructure was destroyed due to attacks by Kremlin forces. When the electricians manage to turn on the light for a few minutes it is a small victory.

Chernihiv in Ukraine was surrounded by the Russians for several weeks right at the start of the invasion.

“We are rebuilding the line because it was badly damaged. Electricity is not something you put in a basket and take home. It has to be produced in order to be consumed. Now, unfortunately, these are the current conditions, but we are doing everything to ensure that things return to normal, as before, or even improve.” said Ukrainian electrician Maksym Khropatyi

Russians step up attacks on Ukrainian power grid

In the middle of winter, Russian forces are multiplying attacks against the country’s infrastructure. In Chernihiv, as in many cities, electricity works intermittently.

“Even if it’s just for five minutes, it’s good. Maybe someone can charge the phone. One day I came home, and my grandson was there. War or no war, he needed the phone. He says: “Grandfather!” and then he jumps into my arms and says, “Thank you, grandpa! There is light!” And two minutes later, he’s gone. It brings tears to my eyes,” said Anatolii Lavrenko, a Ukrainian electrician.

In Kiev, 60% of transformers were destroyed. Faced with the violence of the conflict with Russia, many Ukrainians are starting to move away from the Orthodox tradition and will have to celebrate Christmas on December 25th.
