Ukraine says it shot down a Russian military aircraft

This new attack, which took place on the night of Saturday to Sunday, is part of a series of strikes launched by Kiev on Russian soil with the aim of disrupting the supply of Moscow’s forces that have been bombarding Ukraine continuously since February 2022.

“The enemy’s carcass was burned: a Tu-134 transport aircraft was destroyed in Russia,” the main command of the Ukrainian military intelligence service, under the Ministry of Defense (GUR), wrote on Telegram.

According to this source, the aircraft was hit at the Russian Orenburg-2 military airfield in the southern Urals, about 1,000 kilometers from the Ukraine-Russia border.

GUR released images showing an aircraft on fire and said it was arson, but did not provide further details about what happened.

The aircraft, a Tupolev Tu-134, “belonged to the 117th Airlift Wing of the Armed Forces” of Russia and this category of Soviet-made aircraft “has been used, among other things, to transport leaders of the Russian Ministry of Defense.”

So far, Russia has not made any reference to this attack.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had last May ordered an attack on the Ukrainian border region of Kharkiv in order to create a “neutral zone” according to the authorities, precisely to prevent Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil.

That has not stopped the Ukrainian military from following up on those strikes, with Kiev saying it is targeting military or industrial targets each time that are being used by the Russian military to support the invasion of Ukraine.
