Ukraine said on Monday it was “satisfied” with the summit held in Saudi Arabia over the weekend on a possible peace agreement aimed at ending the fighting, to which Moscow had not been invited.

Representatives from some 40 countries, including China, India, the United States and Ukraine attended the summit, which was held in Jeddah.

“We are very satisfied with the results of the summit,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak.

He added that the principle of a new meeting had been agreed “but no exact date has been set”, adding that “more countries will participate”.

Previously, Moscow had reaffirmed that only the surrender of Kyiv might end its offensive.

“We are convinced that a truly comprehensive, lasting and equitable settlement is only possible if the Kyiv regime puts an end to hostilities and terrorist attacks,” said Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller hailed China’s participation in the summit as “productive”.

“We think China’s presence has been productive,” Miller said.

“We have long believed that China has a role to play in ending the war in Ukraine if it agrees to play a role that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
