On March 29, 2024, Russian airstrikes hit three thermal power plants in Ukraine, causing “severe” damage.
These attacks come at a time of heightened tension in the east Ukrainewhere Russian forces have stepped up their attacks.
The target is the energy network of Ukraine
This was announced by the Ukrainian authorities accusing Moscow of “barbaric” attacks against the energy network.
Moscow has recently stepped up airstrikes against Ukraine, mainly targeting the country’s energy grid and saying they are in retaliation for Kiev’s attacks on Russian border regions.
A total of ten Ukrainian provinces were targeted by the Russian strikes.
Three thermal power plants were severely damaged, Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK announced. “Invaders attacked three thermoelectric plants of DTEK. The equipment was severely damaged. After the attack ended, engineers immediately began repairing the damage,” the company said in a Telegram post.
“Mass attack” in Ukraine
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Smykhal stated that “the Russia continues its barbaric attacks against the Ukrainian energy system.” In some areas there had to be power outages, he added, without specifying their scope.
“Ukraine needs more air defense systems to guarantee the security of its basic infrastructure and to protect its residents,” Shmihal stressed.
This “massive attack” with “drones and missiles” targeted power plants in Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Cherkasy provinces, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galuchenko said for his part.
The governor of Dnipropetrovsk Serhii Lysak pointed out that “tonight the air defense shot down ten drones over the province – in the regions of Pavlograd, Krivi Rykh, Dnipro, Kamiansky. Four missiles were destroyed over Dnipro.”
He added that “many energy facilities” were damaged in the province. At the end of the morning, Lisak pointed out that a woman was killed and a man was injured by a drone attack in the town of Mirivska, near Nikolpol, adding that the town has been targeted since morning.
In Kamianski a farming cooperative was hit and five people were injured – a 5-year-old child and two women aged 19 and 47 who did not require hospital treatment, and two men aged 36 and 47 who are in serious condition.
In Donetsk province, a woman was killed by a Russian airstrike in Mykolayfka, which severely damaged around thirty homes, a market and an administrative building, according to Ukrainian police.
Widespread Russian attacks in recent days, the latest of which occurred today, have caused extensive damage to Ukraine’s electricity generation and transmission infrastructure, forcing Kiev to suspend exports and rely on electricity imports.
Kiev is asking its Western allies to send more aid, and faster. But in Brussels, as in the US, political disputes have delayed arms deliveries and the provision of resources to Ukraine in recent months.
In recent weeks, Ukrainian officials have insisted on the need to send more Patriot air defense systems to the country.
“Heavy air activity”
As announced by the Air Force of Ukraine, the anti-aircraft defense destroyed 84 of the 99 Russian missiles and drones launched during the night.
“On the night of March 29, 2024, the enemy launched a powerful air-missile attack against the energy and fuel sectors of Ukraine using various types of missiles and attack drones,” the statement said. “84 aerial targets were destroyed: 58 Shahed drones and 26 missiles,” he added.
Meanwhile, according to iefimerida, Poland’s armed forces announced that two fighter jets had taken off to monitor the country’s airspace after Russia fired missiles at western Ukraine.
“Intensified long-range air activity on the part of the Russian Federation, associated with missile strikes against targets on Ukrainian territory, was observed this evening,” the Polish military command said in a statement.
“We have taken all necessary actions to protect Polish airspace” and Polish forces are “constantly monitoring the situation,” the statement added.
Warsaw had announced on Sunday that a Russian cruise missile fired towards western Ukraine entered Polish airspace for 39 seconds.
