MOSCOW.- Russia claimed to have thwarted a “massive” Ukrainian attack today by shooting down 158 drones that flew over 15 regions of its territory, including Moscow, and that drone debris had caused fires at the Moscow oil refinery and the Konakovo power plant in the neighbouring Tver region.
kyiv launched one of the largest drone attacks against Russia since the full-scale war began, attacking power plants and an oil refinery overnight as Moscow’s forces continued to advance toward a key city in eastern Ukraine, officials said.
Russian authorities also reported that the fire caused by the The crash of a “downed drone” at the Kapotnia oil refineryin the south-east of Moscow, is “under control”. A local official in the Moscow region said that three drones attempted to attack the Kashira coal-fired power plant, causing “no casualties or damage.” Ukrainian drones attacked two fuel depots in Russia on Wednesday, one in the southwestern Rostov region and another in the northern Kirov region.
Ukraine periodically explains that these attempts at attacks on Russian soil against military targets or sites that assist Russian forces are intended to aim to disrupt the logistics of the Moscow armyin retaliation for daily attacks on their cities and population since the offensive began in February 2022.
The Russians carried out around 10 attacks in Kharkiv, injuring more than 40 peopleincluding medics who rushed to help. This was reported by the head of the Kharkov region, Oleg Sinegubov. Among the damaged infrastructure are a shopping center, a sports facility and residential buildings. This prompted the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenskyto renew its calls for allies to allow kyiv to fire Western-supplied missiles deeper into enemy territory and reduce the threat of attack.
“All the forces necessary for the rescue operation have been brought in,” Zelensky said on his Telegram channel, in response to the Kharkiv attack. “And All the necessary forces in the world must intervene to stop this terror.. This does not require extraordinary forces, but enough courage from the leaders – courage to give Ukraine what it needs to defend itself.” In Kharkov, rescuers and volunteers carried wounded civilians into ambulances after missiles hit the shopping centre and an assembly hall. Broken glass and debris were scattered on the ground, and people fled to a metro station for safety.
The fighting takes place in a critical moment of the conflictwhich has lasted two and a half years, in which Russia is carrying out an offensive in eastern Ukraine while trying to expel Ukrainian forces that breached its western border in a surprise incursion on August 6.
Last week, Russia bombed Ukraine with its most intense air attacks of the war, which affected energy facilitiesas part of a drone and missile bombing campaign that has killed thousands of civilians and soldiers since the conflict began in February 2022.
Ukraine, with a rapidly expanding domestic drone industry, has intensified its own attacks on energy infrastructuremilitary and transport weapons. It is also pressuring the United States and other allies to allow it to use more powerful Western-supplied weapons to inflict greater damage inside Russia and undermine Moscow’s ability to attack Ukraine.
Zelensky stated that Last week alone, Russia had used 160 missiles, 780 guided aerial bombs and 400 unmanned aircraft. attacks on cities and troops across Ukraine. He also called on Telegram for “a decision on long-range strikes against missile launching bases from Russia, the destruction of Russian military logistics, the joint shooting down of missiles and drones.”
kyiv’s allies are wary of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s response if its weapons are used against targets on Russian territory. Russian state news agency TASS quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying: Moscow may change its nuclear doctrine in response to Western actions in Ukraine conflict. He did not specify what the changes would consist of.
