I can try to be a good kid and I will never forget mom. This letter is my gift to my mother on March 8th. Thank you for the best nine years of my life. Amma is the best mother in the world. I want you to go to heaven and be happy there. So we will meet once more in heaven. “I can only go to heaven with my mother if I am a good child,” the girl said in the letter.
On March 8, Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, released a letter from the girl from Borodianka, Ukraine, on Twitter. The New York Post reports that the girl’s mother was killed in an attack on a car during the war.
Thousands of people reacted when the child’s letter came out. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says more than 4.5 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia began its occupation of Ukraine on February 24. As of Sunday, the UNHCR reported that there were 4,503,954 Ukrainian refugees. The BBC reports that there are 62,291 more people in the latest figures than the previous day. The UN agency says this is the first time Europe has seen so many refugees since World War II.
